It’s normal to feel down from time to time. Stress at school, work, or with your family and friends can be overwhelming. What do you do when you’re feeling stressed? Do you talk to someone about it? Do you write in a journal? Do you yell into a pillow?
Feeling bad
Upsetting situations, like a breakup or the death of someone close to you can throw you into a tailspin. You might feel sad for many days or a couple of weeks, but over time, you usually start to feel better. People who become suicidal suffer from an illness called depression, which makes it very hard to cope with life. People who have depression feel suffocated by their feelings. They feel this way for many weeks or more.
Feeling worse
Suicidal thoughts don’t happen overnight. They happen after a period of depression that might go on for many weeks or months. Your problems and worries feel overwhelming. You feel like you just can’t take it anymore. That’s when you have your first thought of ending your life. It seems like the only way out. If you don’t start to feel better, you will keep thinking about suicide until you come up with a plan for ending your life. This is a crisis situation, and you need help.
