Event recap

The Being There for Kids Breakfast presented by Bell Let’s Talk held in Winnipeg on October 12th was a great success with 200 people in attendance and over $27,000 raised. Attendees enjoyed a delicious hot breakfast and inspiring stories from Kids Help Phone.

A highlight from the 2018 Breakfast was the activity where each attendee was asked to write a note of thanks or encouragement to a Crisis Response volunteer on a talk bubble. Afterwards, participants placed their message in a paper bag and one person from each table drew a message from the bag and read it to out loud to their table mates. Each person whose message was read out loud won their centrepiece. These encouraging messages from Breakfast attendees will be shared with our Texting Supervisors and Crisis Response Volunteers.

Jeff Bollenbach, General Manager, Manitoba & Saskatchewan, Radio & TV, CTV, provided greetings on behalf of Bell Let’s Talk and shared the message that it’s important to continue the conversation of mental health as a way to reduce stigma and encourage help seeking behaviour.

Jenny, Colleen, Jeff & Sarah Breakfast Speakers
Jenny Yuen, Associate Vice President of Community Engagement and Mobilization at Kids Help Phone, provided organizational updates and told about the many ways that Kids Help Phone is innovating to meet young people where they are at–despite the changing landscape of the digital and online world. She shared early learnings and stats from Crisis Text Line powered by Kids Help Phone and said that since the texting service launched in Manitoba in February, service usage in the province has tripled.

Jenny Yeun Speaking at Being there for kids breakfast
Texting Supervisor, Sarah Baker, shared stories from the front lines of the new 24/7 texting service and told how young people are courageously reaching out each day through text. She shared three unique and compelling stories of young people who were helped by Crisis Response volunteers.

She also informed attendees about how Crisis Response volunteers are recruited, trained and supported throughout their volunteer journey.
