Helping youth cope with grief and loss

Pages: 6

Experiencing a loss is never easy.

Grief is a powerful emotion and it’s something we all face at some point in our lives. Dealing with grief and loss in a healthy way is vital to maintaining good mental health and well-being.

Yet it’s something we all face at some point in our lives. For kids and teens already struggling with the pressures of growing up, a sudden loss — and the grief that follows — can have a profound impact on their mental health.

Whether it’s the death of someone close to them, divorcing parents, the end of a relationship, or the loss of a dream, young people experiencing a loss — some for the first time in their lives — often don’t know how to cope.

Grief is such a powerful emotion. Long-term grief can lead to mental disorders such as depression, or to negative coping mechanisms like drug and alcohol use, aggressive behaviour, and self-harm. When given coping strategies, young people can begin to process their grief.

By making a heartfelt donation to Kids Help Phone, you can help kids struggling with the pain and confusion that can come with loss. You’ll help to fill a key gap in Canada’s fragmented mental health system, in which kids often aren’t receiving help as quickly as they need it.

With your help, professional counsellors will be there 24/7, to provide a listening ear and help youth recognize their strengths. Our counsellors work with young people to come up with positive coping strategies that will work for them – like journaling, listening to music, or talking to a trusted adult.

Thank you for partnering with us to help young people cope with grief and loss effectively, becoming stronger and more resilient in the process.
