“I don’t know what options I have.”

This question was submitted to Kids Help Phone by a young person and answered by one of our professional counsellors.

Okay, I don’t know what options I have. I’m 17 and I obviously live at home, but sometimes I just want to move out. My main problem with moving out is I don’t have a job so I wouldn’t be able to afford it. What are all the options I have???

I’m really glad that you reached out to us, as it sounds like you are thinking about leaving home. Being able to fund moving out is definitely an understandable concern! In Ontario, you are allowed to move out at the age of 16. If 16+ and left home voluntarily, parents are no longer financially responsible. Perhaps this is something you are already aware of. Some of the ideas that come to mind… -Do you have any friends or relatives you can live with? -You could see if you are eligible for social assistance through Ontario Works, which helps people who are in financial need. -Are you in school? It can be a challenge in balancing both school and work! Are you thinking about getting a job? We could always try and help find you an employment centre in your community, which can help with resume preparation and such., if that interests you. Perhaps there are some ways of making a bit of extra income through things like babysitting, dog walking, etc. -There is the idea of finding a roommate which can help reduce the cost of rent. Do you happen to know anyone who is also thinking about moving out or anyone who is looking for a roommate? Maybe this information will be of some help: kidshelpphone.ca/Teens/InfoBooth/Money-jobs-laws/Money-and-jobs.aspx Are you hoping to leave home immediately or do you have some time to explore options? Would you like to talk to us in terms of why you want to leave home, if you would like to do so? Is there anything we can do to try and support you with regards to why you want to leave home? If you would like to connect with supports in your community, let us know and we would happy to try and find you those supports. My best wishes!
