One Step at a Time

When Aisha came to Canada, she thought the hardest part would be starting over in a new country. She didn’t expect the quiet weight of anxiety that followed her everywhere.
At first, she stayed busy—setting up her life, smiling through conversations, trying to adjust. But slowly, fear began to creep in. Simple things like going outside, talking to people, or even studying felt overwhelming. Her heart would race, her hands would shake, and her thoughts would spiral.
So she stayed home.
It felt safe at first. No pressure. No judgment. But the anxiety didn’t go away. It stayed with her, filling her mind with doubt and making her feel stuck even in the comfort of her room.
One day, she looked out the window and realized something important: she was still anxious, even after avoiding everything.
That’s when something shifted.
The next day, she stepped outside—just for a few minutes. Her heart raced, but she stayed. The day after, she walked a little farther. Some days were hard, and she turned back. But she kept trying.
Slowly, she began studying again. One page at a time. She attended classes, even when her voice shook. She reminded herself that it didn’t have to be perfect—just possible.
With time, the fear didn’t disappear, but it became quieter. She started understanding that anxiety rises, but it also falls.
Then came her exams.
She was nervous, but she showed up. She focused, took a breath, and did her best.
She passed.
Later, she faced interviews. Her heart still raced, but she didn’t run from it anymore. She answered questions, even when her voice trembled.
And then one day, she got the job.
Aisha realized that anxiety hadn’t vanished—but it no longer controlled her. She had learned to move forward with it, not against it.
Because courage isn’t the absence of fear.
It’s choosing to take a step anyway.
One step at a time.
