Finding Balance, Joy, and Connection When Summer Routines Shift

This summer feels different. I recently graduated from university, and while I’m proud and excited for the next chapter, applying to postgraduate programs and exploring new opportunities, I’ve also felt a bit disconnected that I won’t return to school for months or a year depending on when I apply to a program. Without the familiar structure of school, it can be hard to find balance.

When school ends, so do the everyday routines: early mornings, packed schedules, study sessions, and even the casual moments spent with classmates and friends. Suddenly, there’s more free time, and that can feel both exciting and overwhelming.

For me, taking care of my mental health during this transition means doing what I love and loving what I do. Volunteering is a huge part of that. Being part of communities like Kids Help Phone allows me to give back, connect with others, and feel like I’m making a real difference. I’m also involved in research and in programs like Black Donors Save Lives, which raise awareness about systemic inequities and promote representation in healthcare. These opportunities keep me motivated and grounded.

I also try to stay mentally engaged by reading, learning, and preparing for my postgraduate journey. Even though it’s summer, I still love feeding my curiosity, it helps me feel like myself.

That said, summer is also a time for rest. I’ve learned to give myself permission to sleep in a little more, take breaks, drink more water, eat nourishing food, and move my body in ways that feel good, whether that’s through sports, walks, or simply stretching. I cherish time with my family, attend celebrations, and visit relatives in other provinces. Being around people I care about or people in general brings warmth and connection.

Even though the structure of school is gone, I create my own rhythm. Through volunteering, learning, resting, and connecting, I’ve found ways to stay balanced. To anyone else navigating a summer without your usual routine, you’re not alone. It’s okay to slow down, explore new passions, and find joy in the little things.

Sometimes, calm and connection come not from a schedule, but from being present and doing what fills your heart.
