I was born in Canada, but growing up I met many people who moved here from different countries. Some of them were in my classes or joined my sports teams. I noticed how hard it could be for them to adjust learning a new language, understanding school routines, or trying to make friends. Even though I wasn’t a newcomer, I still come from an immigrated family. I realized how much kindness can mean to someone who feels out of place. Sometimes it’s just saying hi, helping them find a classroom, or inviting them to hang out. Those little things can make a big difference. Now, as a Paving Paths Champion, I want to help newcomer youth feel seen, heard, and supported. Everyone deserves to feel like they belong, no matter where they come from.
